Data analysis —
Pulsar in collaboration
with Hearst Italy
The English digital platform Pulsar, in collaboration with Hearst Italy, used the data collected from the social media to share. stories on the Italians' behaviours over the lockdown caused by the covid-19 pandemic. The project was named Barometro Hearst.
Intrigued by the initiative, I analyzed a dataset extracted from the Pulsar platform and designed a few visualizations in order to unveil new stories regarding the sentiment (negative or positive) of the posts shared by the Italians on the social media during the lockdown.
I then connected the insights obtained from the Pulsar data to other data, such as the data of the Italian National Institute of Statistics, looking for correlations between the posts' sentiment and the dynamics of the covid-19 situation in Italy over the first months of the pandemic.
The data analysis and explorations I made were directed toward a better understanding of the Pulsar data and the discovery of new potential stories to tell.
My role in the project:
Data Analysis (R —here the notebooks)
Data Visualization for initial exploration (d3.js)
To create this design, I started with an overview of all the regions in Italy and colored each region using a scale that measured where people shared the most positive social media posts as well as the negative ones. In this way I was able to re-design Italy's geography through the lens of the Italians' social media activity.
For the other data explorations with R, I focused my attention on the Lombardy and Veneto regions, which were the hardest hit by COVID-19. I broke down each region into its provinces, aiming to return a detailed view of what the people's sentiment was in each region's province.
The bold and fresh design of the visualizations was adopted to convey a sense of lightness, so to tone down the urgency and the severity of the topic of the visualizations.
